Speeding vehicles going too fast around a bend may inadvertently cross over on to the other side of the road, or at least hug the middle white lines a little too closely. Sometimes it can come down to overtaking on a bend when it looks safe to do so.<\/p>\n

But the issue here is that motorcyclists are harder to spot, and this is one of the common problems that lead to motorcycle accidents. Whether its cars crossing lanes or pulling on to roundabouts, or out of side roads, drivers are always far less likely to spot a biker.<\/p>\n

So when it comes to veering on to the wrong side of the road around a bend, the same problems apply.

\nThe rules for veering on to the wrong side of the road are pretty clear. Ultimately, all road users have a duty to use their intended lane<\/strong>. Veering on to the wrong side of the road – whilst not illegal where there is a genuine need – can still be negligent.<\/p>\n

Road users are permitted to navigate on or partially on the wrong side of the road so long as it is safe to do so, and so long as there is a justifiable reason. Overtaking is the easiest one, or where a lorry driver may move in to the middle of the road to safely navigate under a bridge. Any manoeuvre like this needs to be undertaken with great care, and drivers must look out for bikers.<\/p>\n

Bikers – always harder to spot…<\/h2>\n

The common issue is that it’s often harder to spot bikers, meaning drivers may perform something like an overtaking manoeuvre, or veer on to the wrong side of the road, and they won’t spot the rider. Ultimately, it can end up in a collision.<\/p>\n

But the fact that a rider is harder to spot is never an excuse. The same rules apply, and any driver who crosses on to the wrong side of the road and hits a motorcyclist can still be liable.<\/p>\n

The seriousness of head on collisions<\/h3>\n

The major difference to take in to account here is the seriousness of a head on collision for a biker. The collision will often result in serious injures even where the rider is riding sensibly with a proper helmet and protective gear. The impact is likely to cause the rider to be thrown from the bike, and broken limbs and head injuries are a serious worry.<\/p>\n
