Broken legs from motorbike crashes are common. In the event of a collision, motorcyclists are not afforded a great deal of protection when compared to car drivers.<\/p>\n

For this reason, bikers are always susceptible to more complicated and serious injuries.<\/p>\n

In direct impact cases, motorcyclists’ legs are easily broken or crushed. Even Ewan McGregor couldn’t escape a broken leg after a freak accident back in March 2007. His advice? “Just keep your eyes in your mirrors. Bikers are vulnerable”.

\nAccording to general medical advice, minor fractures can take between 6-8 weeks to heal, with larger fractures taking several months to half a year. More complicated fractures can take much longer than half a year, and if they fail to set properly, the patient may have a deformed leg and may suffer pain for the rest of their lives. <\/p>\n

Complications can include damage to muscles, damage to nerves, damage blood vessel, bone infections, and problems like compartment syndrome.<\/p>\n

Generally speaking, bone on bone heals rather well; but this is of course dependent on the extent of the damage and the extent of surrounding tissue damage too.<\/p>\n

More serious fractures common with bike accidents…<\/h2>\n

It’s unlikely for a motorcyclist to have a simple minor fracture after a crash. They are likely to need surgery followed by regular physiotherapy sessions to regain function of the broken limb. Whilst in a cast, patients should usually not drive or do any physical activity that may strain the broken leg. Having a broken leg can be a huge burden that impedes the patient’s ability to move around and even go to work. For a biker, it can be worse when you’re unable to even ride out again for a while, too.<\/p>\n
