We had some snow this month – weather that was welcomed with open arms by children across the country, but scorned by road users who were annoyed at travel delays and worried about getting to work and back.<\/p>\n

And worried about accidents, of course.<\/p>\n

You don’t often see bikers braving snow because of the increased risks of accidents. The fact of the matter is that all road users need to take extra care in the snow, and as usual, people must be vigilant for bikes.

\nRoad users cannot simply assume there will be no bikes on the road. Although the colder weather can reduce the number of bikers braving the ice-laden streets, it doesn’t mean there won’t be any bikers at all. A car skidding in to another car at low speeds through a failure to drive to suit the conditions of the road may lead to a minor bump and inconvenience for all involved, but hit a biker and we could be looking at a serious accident.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, it’s hard to stop a vehicle once it’s started to skid. You’re supposed to turn in to the skid and slowly try and bring the vehicle to a safe stop, but we all know that most people panic, swing the steering-wheel on full lock on the opposite direction, and jam the breaks on. This kind of action won’t usually save you.<\/p>\n

Hitting a biker even at low speeds<\/strong> can cost a life; especially in snow and ice when it’s even harder to stop the vehicle and prevent further damage. Skidding in to a biker and knocking them off their bike could easily lead to the vehicle skidding onward and running the biker over, causing serious injuries. With the lack of protection a motorbike offers when compared to a car, a rider is far more likely to suffer more serious injuries.<\/p>\n

We say this a lot, and we repeat it a lot because it’s an important point.<\/p>\n

If a driver fails to adjust their driving to suit the conditions of the road, they remain liable. Even if a driver thought they were being careful enough, it doesn’t always matter. If a car driver loses control of their vehicle and hits a motorcyclist, the car driver is probably going to be found 100% liable for the accident.<\/p>\n
